Tattoos and Piercing: A Body Modification Story Interview
Tell us a brief introduction about yourself Izzy.
My name is Izzy Diamond and I’m 20 years old. I’m from Portland, Maine, but I currently attend college at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. I’m studying secondary education and religious studies. I enjoy reading and painting. I make makeup tutorials on YouTube; makeup art is my biggest passion. I also really enjoy going exploring in the woods and in state parks and I hope to travel around the United States more to discover other landscapes.
On my ears, I have stretched lobes, tragus, and forward helix piercings. I also have two piercings on my nose: nostril and septum piercing. Last but not least, I have a medusa piercing. Check out some of my tattoos. There were done by my good friend tattoo artist who is also from Portland, Watsun Atkinsun. We collaborated together to come up with these Berber and Scandinavian inspired tattoos. Often times we freehand it and add more as we go along. I love how different they are; he truly is a one of a kind artist as nobody really does work quite like him.
When and how did you get your first piercing or tattoo?
Besides getting my ear lobes pierced when I was quite young, I got my forward helix done when I was about 15 years old. I had seen some pictures on the internet at the time, and I thought it was a really unique placement. That’s definitely something I look for in new piercings — something unique.
I got my first tattoo, my leg mandala piece, done for my 18th birthday by one of my good friends and artists. (He worked with my current tattoo artist, and that’s how we met.) We came up with the design together, incorporating my artwork with his style. It took two 4-hour sessions surprisingly.
That’s when I started to get really into tattoos and body art.
Which one is your favorite piercing?
My favorite piercing is my medusa. I had my vertical labret pierced for a couple of weeks but it was super annoying. It healed and didn’t leave a scar. I feared that the medusa would damage my gums, but my lips are formed in a way that the very tiny post of the medusa doesn’t touch my teeth or gums at all. I think medusa piercings are very attractive and can complement the face really well.
Which one is your favorite tattoo?
My favorite tattoo so far is a tiny back piece. It was the second piece I got done by my current artist (my chest was the first one). Although I never get to see it, I think it is so stunning. We work very spontaneously together; oftentimes he’ll call or text me with an idea and we do it the next day. That adds to the excitement of it all.
We finished it in about two hours. I like working with the same artist on many pieces do that they can all connect together into one giant body piece.
When did you get your earlobe pierced?
I got my ear lobes pierced when I was probably 8 or 10. I don’t have any memories of it really.
Can you tell us more about the stretching process?
I never wore earrings often because I have very sensitive skin and can only wear stainless steel, titanium, or gold. That’s why I decided to stretch my ears because it would encourage me to wear earrings more. My roommate in college actually told me I should try since she stretched her own ears to a 0g. I’m at a size 2g right now, but I don’t plan on going any bigger. The whole process took about 6-9 months.
Does stretching your earlobe hurt?
It’s definitely a much different feeling than anything I’ve done. I liked the feeling actually, mostly because I love the adrenaline rush.
What piercings or tattoos do you still want to get?
What is your goal for the rest of this year?

Hello! My name is Emily and I obsessed with piercings (and tattoos) since I was a little girl of 6 years old. I was fortunate enough to make my passion my work after meeting my amazing husband Jeffrey who owned his own tattoo shop. I just recently finished my internships at some of America’s most famous piercing shops and a dream to start something together was born. After falling in love with each other (and each other’s piercings and tattoos) we decided to expand his tattoo shop and I got to manage my own piercing shop in the same space! I’ve never been so happy being able to share my love for piercings through my shop and this blog I started back in 2013. We love to share models and inspiration, so feel free to email me your suggestions, pictures or if you just want to say hi!
